The Little Things Build the Big Things
What Actually Matters Right Now
This month has been full of exciting headlines.
The World Cup has been incredible to watch. AI continues to dominate conversations. And if you've talked to me recently, there's a good chance the SpaceX IPO came up at some point.
As exciting as those moments are, they've reminded me of something much bigger.
Whether it's sports, investing, parenting, or life, the biggest successes rarely come from one exciting moment. They're usually the result of hundreds of small, consistent decisions that nobody sees.
We celebrate the game-winning goal. We don't see the years of practice that made it possible.
The same is true with our finances.
If This Sounds Familiar...
Lately, I've had several conversations with clients about the excitement surrounding the SpaceX IPO. Interestingly, some of those conversations were with clients who have always described themselves as conservative investors.
My advice wasn't that SpaceX is a good investment or a bad investment.
It was simply this:
If an investment doesn't fit your goals or your comfort with risk today, the headlines shouldn't suddenly change that.
One of the hardest and often, we find, most valuable parts of investing is staying consistent. Find the level of risk that's right for you, even when everyone around you seems to be doing something different.
That's where a financial plan becomes so valuable.
A good financial plan helps you decide which opportunities actually belong in your long-term strategy. Stick with it.
Before we talk about an exciting IPO, AI investment, or the latest market trend, I want to make sure we've already taken care of the fundamentals:
- Building an emergency fund
- Saving consistently for retirement
- Diversifying your investments
- Reviewing beneficiaries and estate documents
- Making smart tax decisions
- Investing money you'll need in the next few years appropriately
Once that foundation is in place, we can absolutely explore new opportunities. The difference is we're making those decisions from a position of confidence instead of emotion.
Lessons From My House
Funny enough, I've realized I've been having many of these same conversations at home.
Our daughter recently turned 14 and was beyond excited to get her first phone.
Before she ever turned it on, though, she had to sign a "phone contract" with Mom and Dad.
Yes...that earned me a few eye rolls.
The goal wasn't to make getting a phone less exciting. It was to remind her that something valuable also comes with responsibility. A phone is an incredible tool, but it's also an expensive piece of technology that comes with expectations around safety, respect, and good decision-making.
Then there was our 11-year-old, Max.
He "borrowed" my husband's putter without asking and somehow managed to lose it.
Let's just say he wasn't thrilled when we told him he was going to work it off.
It was about taking care of someone else's belongings and asking permission first. Understanding that righting our mistakes often requires more than just "replacing it." When you put in the effort to take responsibility for it, you will make it right.
My parenting advice is usually met with plenty of eye rolls and, on occasion, being called a "Karen."
It's still a work in progress!
But I hope one day these little lessons stick.
Because investing isn't all that different.
Long-term success usually isn't built from one exciting investment.
It's built from hundreds of thoughtful decisions made over time.
This Month's Challenge
Before making your next financial decision, pause for a moment.
Ask yourself:
Am I making this decision because it fits my long-term goals...or because I'm reacting to today's excitement?
Sometimes the best financial decision isn't doing more.
It's staying the course.
Around My World
📺 Watching
Lucky (Apple TV+)
If you're looking for your next binge-worthy series,Luckyhas been one of my favorites this month. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, it's a fast-paced crime thriller filled with twists, betrayals, and just enough suspense to keep you saying, "One more episode."
📚 Reading
Just Finished:The Great Big Beautiful Lifeby Emily Henry
This was the perfect summer read. Part romance and part mystery, it follows two writers competing for the chance to tell the story of a mysterious, reclusive heiress. It was light enough for vacation reading but had enough twists to keep me guessing until the end.
Currently Reading:Gone Before Goodbyeby Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben
I'm only getting started, but if you enjoy thrillers, this one has my attention already. It's fast-paced, suspenseful, and has all the ingredients for a great page-turner.
❤️Doing
Like many families, we're trying to squeeze in every last bit of summer before school starts. We're working our way through our family's summer bucket list and soaking up these final few weeks before backpacks, homework, and busy schedules return. It's a good reminder that some of the best memories come from the simplest moments.
